The series tells the story of five German friends, aged around 20, on their different paths through Nazi Germany and World War II: as Wehrmacht soldiers on the Eastern Front, a war nurse, an aspiring singer, and a Jewish tailor.

Greta, who has always dreamed of a career as a singer, advances to become a celebrated revue star - despite pangs of conscience. But soon the war upheaves their lives, and each of them is forced to take a stand on the Nazi regime.
